DFO Option Select Miniguide

    What is it?

Option select is when a player inputs multiple commands with the intention to let the game pick which option is best for the situation. Originating from fighting games, this is commonly used to select between blocking and throw-breaking.

How does it apply to DFO?

Although it doesn’t happen very often, there are instances where status afflictions require you to mash out. This is the most common situation where option select comes in. When you’re mashing out of statuses, the game requires you to input Z, X, C, and, at least, the left and right arrows to break out faster. What sometimes results, though, is that you find yourself doing something you don’t want to be doing as soon as you break out. This guide’s job is to teach players to prevent this from happening as much as possible.

    How does it actually work?

There are two main option selects and depending on your class one will be more beneficial than the other most of the time.

After you’ve been mashing for a bit, start mashing only Z to get your SA launcher move. This is obvious. In this situation, you only have to worry about your direction, which can be solved by holding the direction you want your launcher to come out in.

    -OR-

In addition to your mashing, press the hotkey for a certain skill at the same time you press your other buttons. This is where the actual option select takes place. The game will ALWAYS select your hotkey over the three buttons, meaning that if you, for example, press the hotkey for Laser while pressing Z, X, and C, Laser will always come out.

    Is it useful anywhere else?

The second (and perhaps more obvious) use is when you have two skills you can use, but are not sure which one is in cool down. When you press both hotkeys, the game will either pick the one that is not on cool down or pick the skill based on predetermined programming.

Suppose you wanted to do BBQ on your gunner, but you’re not sure if it’s in cool down. You can option select between the BBQ hotkey and Punisher hotkey. If BBQ was in cool down, you’ll come out and do Punisher instead. If neither were in cool down, then the game will select to do Punisher. While the last one may seem bad, it can be avoided by pressing BBQ a fraction before Punisher so that if neither skill is in cool down you will get BBQ and if BBQ is in cool down you will get Punisher.

    Limitations and rules:

This is probably easier on a joystick.

C will take precedence over X and Z, and X takes precedence over Z.

All three buttons will lose out to a hotkey’d command.

In the situation that Z loses to a hotkey’d command, it will enter cool down. Why? I do not know.

If you press a hotkey while pressing C and Z, Z will not enter cool down. The game will treat it as if it was never pressed in the first place, but I’m under the impression that it will still count towards your mash.

Hotkey’d commands will lose out to unsealed commands. The hotkey’d command will then enter cool down. If you selected between, for example, Punisher and Land runner and Land runner was not hotkey'd, Land runner will come out and Punisher will be on cool down. There seems to be some exceptions, most notably with Grenade.

Unsealed commands will lose out to X and C.

Unsealed commands will lose out to Backstep, hotkey’d commands will not. Unsealed commands will not enter cool down phase.

There is absolutely no leniency when it comes to option selecting. If you were option selecting between a hotkey and jump and got jump, you did not press the two keys at the same time.

Class methods followed by individual subclass methods if they apply. Feel free to contribute to this section.

    Slayer:
Method 1, Upper slash, maybe even guard.

    Blade Master:
    Method 2, Charge Crash.

    Berzerker:
Method 2, Raging Fury (will probably trade, but most likely in your favor)

    -

    Fighter:
    Method 1, Muse Uppercut

    Grappler:
If you have Unstoppable grab, any of your ground grabs may work with Method 2.

    -

    Priest:
    Method 1, Giant Weapon Launcher

    Monk:
Method 2, Sacred Counter (maybe, depends on its start up, but it seems instant. Sometimes you will not move forward, though)

    -

    Male Gunner:
    Method 1, Jack spike
    Method 2, BBQ
(You can actually option select between the two and you'll get one knee or the other)

    Female Gunner:
    Method 1, Marylin Rose
    Method 2, BBQ
Method 2, Spriggan (it lowers your hitbox, so you might just squeeze under attacks)

    Ranger:
Method 2, Mach Kick/Needle Sobat (maybe, it might just be fast enough to poke them in between their attacks. You might trade, but with a high enough chance to stun it's certainly in your favor)

    -

    Mage:
    ...Sorry

    Battle Mage:
    Method 2, Punto Wave

    Witch:
    Method 2, Black Manteau

I think you can use Punto Wave with battlemage ?
